Here at Sunday Woman, we are privy to some of the most decedent and atmospheric eateries in the South. We’re pleased to share that The Unruly Pig, Suffolk’s own 16thCentury pub, definitely rivals our favourites in the ‘atmospheric’ category and doesn’t compromise on cuisine quality either – win!

The Unruly Pig aims is to combine great food with great drink in an intimate and relaxed atmosphere for couples, families and friends and the team strives to cook quality, unfussy food with skill, care and passion – simple! Head Chef Dave Wall (previously known for gracing the kitchens of the likes of Gordon Ramsay’s Boxwood Café and Claridge’s) works on an Inka grill which enhances both the flavour and succulence of grilled meat and fish. Who knew!

Set two hours out of London and deep in the heart of rural Suffolk, it’s almost rude not to turn your visit to the Unruly Pig into a weekend break. You can spend your time perusing the local shops (not forgetting the infamous Pump Street bakery and its to-die-for donuts), and walking along the waterfront. A word of caution though, it’s definitely worth ditching the heels and donning the wellies when you visit – we learned that the hard way!

Entering the Unruly Pig is like entering the arms of a warm blooded, lifelong friend – familiar and comforting. The staff and cosy atmosphere greet you just as quickly as the warmth from the roaring fires and it’s an impressive cocktail selection, softly lit bar area and the venue’s character that first catch your eye when you walk in.

Food, glorious food…

The Unruly Pig serves outstanding, honest pub grub that’s taken up a notch with hearty portions and complex flavours. There are no pretentious dishes here, just quality recipes, locally sourced ingredients and a great selection of food worth celebrating. If you’re in the mood for snacking, the dripping chips are crisp yet fluffy pieces of heaven and the Roasted Squash Velouté that accompanies the Ravioli of Ceps will have you experience cravings in the deepest darkest hours. Equally, if you’re seeking a steak that’s been cooked with so much care that it can rival the likes of the prestigious Gaucho chain, you’re in the right place at The Unruly Pig. Its hero dishes include Smoked Potato and Pig Croquettes and Brisket and Bone Marrow on Toast. Sage and thyme stuffed rabbit, baked polenta and cauliflower

Sunday Woman’s stand out feature….

Whether you’re popping in for a quick drink or you’re looking to settle yourself for the evening, you’d be hard pressed to find somewhere as ambient as The Unruly Pig. It’s not about minimalist features or trying to ride modern trends of the moment, instead there’s TLC by the bucketload and comforting touches to meet your every move. This pub ticks the boxes for being the perfect intimate date night and there’s no chance that you’ll be getting caught up in the stresses of the day when you’re unwinding in each other’s company and the romantic lights!

What we like….

Pretty much everything gets a tick from us at The Unruly Pig. From friendly service, cosy settings, beautiful surroundings (inside and out) and great grub – we feel you’d be made of stone to walk out unimpressed and without a fuzzy feeling.

What we like a little less…

You’re waiting a while between courses but in all honesty, we recommend savouring every moment with your loved ones in this place so extending the time between meals is only a gift by the staff. Thanks, guys.

Well, who’d have thought…

Don’t be fooled into thinking that just because this eatery classes itself at as a traditional ‘pub’ set in scenic Suffolk, it’s not competing with the London big wigs. Voted one for the top six food-pubs in the East of England by the Michelin Guide, this pub is definitely one to consider for the wow-factor.

It’s your perfect place if….

You’re looking for a date night that doesn’t have to end with a dinner. Visit The Unruly Pig and you’ll be snuggled up near roaring fires feeling miles away from modern distractions. We dare you to want to use your phone for anything other than making people jealous of your whereabouts and food choices!

The small print…
