Martina Mercer caught up with Jessica Clemmons this week to discuss childhood memories, regrets and becoming a step mum. With the release of her album, Jessica is obviously very busy, however it didn’t stop her from radiating charm throughout the whole interview.

These Foods to Absolutely Avoid If You Want Clear, Glowing Skin

1. What is your earliest childhood memory?
Oh that’s a tough one. I have a lot but one of the ones I always remember is having my favorite records that I listened to on my parents record player. I was about 2 or 3 and would put on all of my moms jewelry, put the needle exactly where the song started and then dance around and sing to the same song over and over again. My poor parents lol.

2. Who was your best friend at school, please describe them. Are you in touch now?
I actually had two. Sylvia was the complete opposite of me but we got along so well. She was always a bit of a bad girl compared to me but I think we balanced each other out. We are actually still best friends even though we don’t get to see each other as often. My other best friend was Amanda. Amanda and I were like sisters. We laughed hard and fought hard but couldn’t have been better friends. We’ve actually had a lot of ups and downs but I’m blessed to still have her as one of my best friends today. Amanda, Sylvia and I were like the three musketeers. We did everything together. Both of them are matron’s of honor in my upcoming wedding.

3. Did you have a trouble free teenage life? If not, why?
For the most part. I really struggled in school because I’m dyslexic so that was probably the most difficult time I had. As an early teenager I was bullied a bit but that didn’t last long once the bullies saw that I wasn’t going to take it.

4. What has been the biggest change in your life so far?
Getting engaged to a man with teenage children. This is not as all what I expected but he is totally worth it and his kids are so great. Definitely makes me realize how selfish I am lol. No time to be selfish when kids are involved.

5. Have you made any enemies along your way? How have you dealt with them?
I think I make enemies when I stand up to people. There are a lot of people in the music industry with very strong personalities and also people who are out to take advantage of you. When they know you’re onto them, it usually doesn’t go well. Thankfully, those aren’t the type of people I want in my life anyway.

6. Do you have a best friend? Who is it? (If you’d rather not mention names, please just describe the person). I have a lot! My manager is one of my best friends. We’ve been through a lot together. Amanda and Sylvia as mentioned before. My friend Sarah who I’ve been friends with since I was 10 years old. My roommate Kelli and I have known each other since we were about 13 or 14 and have been partners in crime ever since we were out of high school. Erika and a Christiane are the latest additions. We met when I was singing the national anthem for the Houston ice hockey team and have grown in our friendship ever since. Then there is Kevin. We’ve only been friends for about 3 or 4 years now but it’s been a fast friendship to becoming bff’s. He’s become one of my closest friends lately!

7. If we were to grant you a wish to change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Honest, I have a few health conditions that hinder weight loss. I’d like to take those away so that all of the work I do would actually show!

8. What do you think is the key to happiness?
Finding happiness in your current situation. Life can suck at times but if you can be content in whatever time in your life you’re in, you’re going to be happy.

9. What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
Right now? It’s helping my family rebuild after Hurricane Harvey. Other times, it’s just knowing how much there is to be done to achieve my dreams.

10. What are you doing currently? Please briefly describe your busiest day
I wake up around 5am and turn on my computer and start answering all of the emails from everyone in my team in the U.K. That will keep me busy for a few hours. Then I head over to my parents house, who flooded in the storm. We’re boxing up the entire house so they can move out for the next 6 months while it’s being rebuilt. Then I work on music some more. Usually try and cook dinner for the family and then I pass out so I can do it all over again the next day.

On a normal non storm related day I am busy working on music most of the day. Writing it, promoting it, talking to fans… you name it. Now that the new album is out, there is a lot of work to be done with social media! It’s all worth I though!
